Summer Skills Academy

A free, two-week programme held during the long school holiday in Ota. Young people learn the basics of a practical trade from experienced instructors, so they can become financially strong and independent, and they find the motivation to keep developing their skills on their own.

Recent editions: 2022 focused on ICT (8–19 August, with Awards of Excellence for outstanding learners; see it in pictures). 2023 trained participants in baking, tailoring and ICT, introduced them to STEM, and taught them how to lead productive, active lives.

  • Baking & culinary arts: food preparation, hygiene and kitchen basics
  • Tailoring & fashion design: measuring, cutting and sewing fundamentals
  • ICT: digital literacy and practical computer skills for school and work
  • STEM exposure: an introduction to science, technology, engineering and mathematics
  • Barbing: tools, technique and client care (earlier editions)

Learning Centre & mini library

Many bright young people in our community cannot afford fee-paying tutorial centres. At our training centre they receive free lectures to prepare for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, the gateway to university in Nigeria.

  • Free JAMB preparation lectures
  • A mini library for quiet study and revision
  • A supportive space for adolescents between secondary school and university

Programmes & focus areas

Community health

Health outreach & awareness

Taking accurate health information into the places young people and families spend their days. In 2018 we partnered with the Academy for Health Development (AHEAD) on a week-long World TB Day campaign in Ota. The team ran awareness sessions in schools, markets and motor parks, and worked with the local government TB team to offer free TB/HIV screening.

Annual · 15 July

World Youth Skills Day

Each year we mark the United Nations' World Youth Skills Day by celebrating young people's talent and hard work, and by inviting more of them to take up free skills training.

Ongoing

Character development

A programme that moulds the character of young people, building values, integrity and responsibility so they grow into better citizens.

Focus area

Adolescent health & well-being

Age-appropriate education on growing up, mental well-being and making safe, informed choices, delivered in ways young people trust.

How we work

Partnerships

We partner with other organisations to deliver on our promises to young people, as in our 2018 health campaign with AHEAD.

How we work

Measuring what matters

We track our activities and listen to feedback from participants, which shows positive change in the lives of the young people we serve.
